First ever Tiger Trout - Alberta Outdoors Forum (19)First ever Tiger Trout

Funny how life still throws you firsts and I caught my first ever Tiger trout yesterday. 10 inches but it could have been three feet by the way I felt.
Managed four in a row after that and one was 19 inches….baked him last night in the oven and the meat was delicious. Minced garlic and butter wrapped in tin foil 400 degrees for 40 minutes, just wow, meat was pink and really good.
Ohhh toss in a rainbow to top off the outing.
One thing I would like to say is when the first tiger came up through the ice it was simply stunning as in the markings but the colour faded before I could get a relatively good photo.
Not sure if this is common but it did happen. First ever Tiger Trout - Alberta Outdoors Forum (20)

This Tiger was big in my books at 19 inches and made great table fare.

Yes Well done!! Me and the wife did not fare so well...lol. spent most of the afternoon sorting out kit issues as this was our first journey onto the ice this season, and everything was a bit all over the place after the move...so no fish on the ice for us. We did however have the opportunity to see a few Tigers on the camera, which was cool! Now after a few days of sorting out the gear and doing detailed kit check...we are ready!! And...ya...thanks to Cat for tossing us a jig and some bait...lol...brought everything out and forgot the tackle bag...HOWEVER, it was a soild affirmation as to why we moved to a place that has amazing fishing in a variety of locations within 30 minutes of the house. Had we not had such a gracious host as Cat...it would of been a quick run back to the house to grab it! Can't wait to get back on the ice here in a couple days and find those Tigers!!

Believe it or not pick up a shrimp cocktail platter. I bite off and eat the meaty part ohhh and you can dip it in the sauce that comes with the platterFirst ever Tiger Trout - Alberta Outdoors Forum (105) I use a very small jig head and put only the tail on, hook goes up through the shell but make sure the hook is exposed. Generally speaking these trout are always on the move but the only thing I do is early I like to sit in 3-5 fow, as the morning goes on I will move out to 9 fow or so then out to 12-15 fow mid day. As the sun starts to dip I make my way back to shallower water. This outing I used straight 20lb braid and had no issues with break offs at the ice hole.

This works on this lake not sure on others but worth a try, good luck.

Will do, The big tiger that I baked was delicious like I said a light pink flaky meat that just melted in your mouth. Will fry up a few today and report back.

Surely it depends on the lake - water and forage. Glad you have a good one. I have a local pond that the forage is largely water beetles and they are the worst tasting rainbows I have ever tried. Not even close to edible. Meanwhile there are some other lakes that are just fine. Maybe we need to create a "Tastability" index for our trout lakes First ever Tiger Trout - Alberta Outdoors Forum (121)

o.k. so I cooked four trout for lunch and served it to my son and his buddy. Three trout were tigers and one was a rainbow. All were lightly coated in flour, salt and pepper cooked in butter. The meat on all four was a light pink color and yup they were great. No muddy taste at all thank god as you had me almost looking for a muddy taste but non what so ever. First ever Tiger Trout - Alberta Outdoors Forum (128)

I can see how they maybe muddy tasting as this lake prior to the aerators being installed was just that....all trout went on the smoker if kept but over the last two seasons they have been great eaters.

wait til you try the rainbows from Dewitt's pond, it will give your local pond a run for top spot! but on other hand, Chain lake rainbows taste great.
